Recreational weed may be a reality in Colorado in the wake of Amendment 64, but its older brother, the medical-marijuana industry, continues to face financial and public-relations hurdles in winning acceptance from the wider business community. Few know that better than the owners of Colorado’s 675 medical-marijuana dispensaries, many of which have met heated opposition when trying to become established in neighborhoods across the state. “A couple of years ago, there was nothing in place to normalize the industry and keep [...]
Like any farmer, Elliott Klug understands the highs and lows of living off the land. But his crop requires a rigorous effort. To keep output going, it is harvested every week. It is also grown only indoors. And though you won’t find this tip in the Farmer’s Almanac, his workers believe that blaring Grateful Dead songs boosts productivity. “We were the bad guys,” says Mr. Klug, chief executive of Pink House Blooms, a 70-person operation that produces and sells marijuana [...]
Lawmakers late Thursday introduced a long-awaited bill of proposed regulations for recreational marijuana, moving Colorado one step closer to a legal pot marketplace. The 57-page bill contains the most contentious ideas endorsed by a special legislative committee for how recreational marijuana businesses should operate and be structured. A second bill, also introduced late Thursday, lays out a proposed tax structure for marijuana that voters would be asked to approve. Lawmakers are also expected to introduce a third bill, containing non-controversial [...]
Brendan Kennedy and Michael Blue are nice boys. Really. They’re bankers. Yale MBA classmates. Wearers of ties. And, if luck and changing laws cooperate, they’ll be drug barons of a certain kind. Kennedy, 40, and Blue, 34, are in the vanguard springing up to seize the market for legal marijuana, which is accelerating with last fall’s legalization of most personal pot consumption in Colorado and Washington state. They’re running a Seattle private-equity fund, Privateer Holdings, designed to buy up the [...]
Welcome to canna-ful Colorado. Two Denver entrepreneurs with ties to the medical-marijuana industry have started the nation’s first marijuana tourism company. For several hundred bucks — prices vary betweenVIP and economy levels— My 420 Tours will pick visitors up at the airport, connect them to a pot-friendly hotel, set up hash-making demonstrations and dispensary-grow tours, and provide them with tickets to cannabis-themed events and concerts. The company’s first package is built around April 20, a date cannabis enthusiasts regard as [...]
(Reuters) – After a decades-long campaign to legalize marijuana hit a high mark in 2012 with victories in Washington state and Colorado, its energized and deep-pocketed backers are mapping out a strategy for the next round of ballot-box battles. They have their sights set on ballot measures in 2014 or 2016 in states such as California and Oregon, which were among the first in the country to allow marijuana for medical use. Although those states more recently rejected broader legalization, [...]
A man jurors acquitted of multiple marijuana felonies has sued the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office after his 42 plants were destroyed, according to a lawsuit recently filed in 8th Judicial District Court. Denver lawyer Rob Corry said his client expects to receive $5,000 per plant (totaling $210,000), based on what law enforcers have testified a marijuana plant is worth, in addition to attorney fees. Kaleb Young, 34, had been growing the plants in a Wellington home in compliance with Colorado’s [...]
